Michigan city has lots of excellent restaurants including the best sushi restaurant eeeeever, just downstairs. Bring your bikes and ride the local bike trails, take the South Shore train to Chicago for the day or if you're feeling lucky, you could visit the Blue Chip Casino. If you need a little retail therapy you can check out the shopping at the Lighthouse Outlet Mall.
Some great side junkets include Three Oaks which is about 25 minutes away. Sample a couple of craft cocktails and get a bite to eat at the Journeyman Distillery. A wonderful distillery occupying the historic Featherbone building, which manufactured corsets and buggy whips, back in the day. Be sure to visit Trilogy, and some of the other unique shops in the historic downtown district.
Bridgeman is also about 25 minutes away and have a couple of great breweries. Sample a flight and pick up a growler of your favorite!
The Red Arrow Highway is a great driving excursion with lots of restaurants and antiques shops along the way.

Summary: We have stayed in Michigan city several times during the past summers and this could possibly be our favorite place so far. Starting with the location. It’s within walking distance of several restaurants. The most convenient is right below, Mucho Mas. Nice little Mexican restaurant. Other nearby places were fiddlehead restaurant, Leeds, café Farina, among others. All very good. It’s also about a mile from the beach. We walked down there a couple days and other days drove and parked a little bit further up the coast. The apartment itself was clean and had all the amenities that you would need. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils - had several meals in. They also had the typical spices and cooking supplies. We loved how everything was labeled as far as the switches so it was easy to tell which switch went to what light or fan, etc.. They also had some extras like a cooler you could take to the beach or a beach chair, or a backpack, or a small beach blanket. We didn’t have our dog with us, but it was dog, friendly with treats and poop bags and blankets to put down on the couches if you have a dog that refuses to stay on the floor, ha ha. Food and water bowl as well. The check-in process was simple. The owners communicated very well. There was a grocery store just about a five minute drive away. It was also very close to the casino. The bed was comfortable. The dishwasher was convenient as well as the washer and dryer. I can’t say enough good things about this place.
