Maps, that invisible, stubborn phantom, gestured toward a reality that simply refused to manifest. The mind began to fray at the edges; had I been bamboozled by the mere illusion of shelter? Was I chasing a ghost? In a sudden flutter of desperate resolve, I abandoned the threshold of my own doubt and stepped inside. I must ask them, I thought, if they have ever heard of this Motel West, or if I have simply lost my footing in time altogether. And there, the truth revealed itself with the dull thud of mundane reality. It was a matter of history—undisclosed history. How easily a line of text might have spared the spirit: “Formerly the Pendleton Inn suites” A simple postscript to bridge the past and the present.
