Positive: The house is well located; well equipped eg great amount of fridge & freezer space, lovely touch to have the boot warmer, book shelves packed with guide books to look through and spare hiking poles to borrow in the hallway; convenient parking and again a fantastic touch to provide a permit for the carpark. We hiked Pen Y Ghent from the doorstep, and we're able to visit other destinations from the convenience of the Horton location
Negative: We stayed during October half term - it is possible that this was a unique problem because it may have been the first time this season that the heating was on, but unfortunately with the open plan nature of downstairs the diesel type smell from the oil fired central heating was overwhelming. We could see that the servicing was up to date, and checked that carbon monoxide (which is in any event odourless) alarm was working, so whilst we were not overly concerned from a safety point of view, it was very unpleasant to be in. We were initially offered to be moved, but declined on the first night having settled in after a long journey, receiving a food delivery, needing to feed the kids and with no idea where we might be put up instead, as we were shortly turning in and the smell did not spread to upstairs. We hoped that someone could have come to check eg if there had been a leak which was causing the smell and which could be cleaned or another fault, but noone could be arranged to do this during our stay. It was again suggested that as they couldn't get anyone to check we would need to be moved and refunded, yet did not receive any indication of where we might be moved to and what facilities we'd have in alternative accommodation, so with plans to hike Pen Y Ghent we continued to make do. This meant opening all the downstairs windows (when we were in) to let the smell clear, which it eventually did after 3-4 days. However during this time of course the downstairs was obviously very cold so we had to layer up with blankets and - after buying matches as there were none - lighting the fire. As a refund and being moved elsewhere had been mentioned, we'd hoped that we might as a gesture of goodwill be offered a partial refund for the inconvenience, however when I asked about this possibility communications dries up.
